Where SayerMade Began: A Little Introduction to Me & My Crafting Journey

A Warm Hello

I wanted my first blog to be more than an introduction. I wanted it to feel like a conversation over a cup of tea. If you’re here, you’re probably someone who loves thoughtful gifting, handmade pieces, or simply wants to know the heart behind SayerMade.
So this is my story. The real one. The messy, creative, slightly chaotic journey that led me here, to a small business built on love, craft, and the joy of making something personal for someone else.

🌿 Growing Up in a Hands‑On Family

I come from a family that loves to use their hands. Growing up, my dad was always building or fixing something, and my mum always had a cross stitch on the go. She also bought me my first sewing machine and taught me how to use it. That moment sparked everything, the curiosity, the creativity, the joy of making something from nothing.

The first thing I ever made for someone was a little messenger bag for a friend’s little girl after she’d spent lunch playing with my handbag. From there, simple bags turned into adding zips, lining them properly, and even designing my own patterns. Soon I was asking my mum to teach me how to read a pattern, and I proudly made myself a whole range of pencil skirts.

My fabric stash grew faster than my skill set but my love for crafting grew even faster.

🧵 Discovering Embroidery (and a Whole New World)

When a colleague announced she was having a baby, I decided to make her a quilt and hand‑embroider their family name on it. It took weeks, including stitching during my lunch breaks, but I loved every second. That little personal touch made it feel extra special.

After a few hand‑embroidered projects, I started researching embroidery machines. Before long, I was booking a day off work and heading to the NEC with my mum. A couple of weeks later, I was dyeing a denim jacket and embroidering it with my brand‑new Janome 500e. A whole new world had opened up.

🔥 The Moment Everything Changed

Family and friends had been telling me for years to start a business, but self‑doubt and imposter syndrome always held me back… until 2025.

I dragged my husband to the NEC for a craft show and fell in love with a laser cutter. The moment the exhibitor showed me what it could do, my mind exploded with possibilities, especially how I could combine it with everything I already loved making.

We spent the entire drive home planning ideas and imagining what a small business could look like. I even convinced my husband to come all the way to Bridlington (A whole other story) with me for a more detailed demo before making the purchase. It was a big commitment, and I’m so grateful to him for giving up space in the garage for my next craft adventure, and to all my family thank you for believing in me, encouraging me to give it a go and helping me fund my crazy idea.

💡 A Mind Full of Ideas (Sometimes Too Many)

Since that trip, my mind hasn’t stopped racing. From building my website to dreaming up products, planning marketing, and creating social content, I’m constantly buzzing with ideas. Sometimes too many at once, if I’m honest.

But that’s the magic of crafting. One idea leads to another, and suddenly you’re down a rabbit hole of materials, colours, textures, and possibilities.

🎁 Why I Love What I Do

One of my favourite feelings is when an idea for a gift or product hits me whether it’s for a customer or a loved one. I always want to make sure it’s personal to them: their style, their story, their moment.

Sometimes everything comes together quickly. Other times it takes research, testing, or hunting for the perfect materials. But the process is always worth it.

I get so excited about gifting things I’ve made, but I also get ridiculously nervous to the point where I often avoid handing it over myself. But that moment when someone sees their personalised, handmade gift for the first time… it never gets old. Their reaction makes every stitch, cut, and late night worth it.
